Release Time:2018-10-23 Back to list

To see if stem cell implants filled with insulin-producing cells can regulate blood glucose levels in people with type 1 diabetes.
Researchers at the University of Alberta in Canada recruited 17 patients in the world's first trial to study this innovative new treatment.
Participants will have a small plastic bag containing millions of skin implanted insulin secreting cells. Once the implant grows around the blood vessel, this should allow stem cells to release insulin according to the patient's blood sugar level.
Studies have shown that the technology is effective in the mouse model of type 1 diabetes. This test will assess whether it is safe for human body.
The study is still at a very early stage, and the results from the trial are expected to be in the next two years, which is indeed a "very exciting" early indicator for doctors.
